Stephen Farrelly and Gary Anthony Williams on Letting Loose for ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’

     June 4, 2016

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows includes two new and exciting additions to the original 2014 reboot. Gary Anthony Williams and Stephen Farrelly star as Bebop and Rocksteady, deadly mutants created by mad scientist Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry) and The Turtles prime enemy Shredder (Brian Tee).

Williams, an improv artist who’s frequently appeared on Whose Line is it Anyway?, and Farrelly, of pro wrestling fame, bring an enjoyable level of color and humor to the film.

It preserves what fans love but also feels current.

In my video interview with the duo, they discussed how their experience in other fields came into play during the action flick. Farrelly compared the creativity involved in wrestling with that of portraying a character. Williams noted that they were both encouraged to improvise and try out their own ideas on set. They also spoke about being inspired by and playing off of one another during shooting.

Stephen Farrelly and Gary Anthony Williams:

  • How they both called on their unique skillset for their roles.
  • The natural chemistry between them that reads so well on screen.
  • Trying out scenes multiple ways during takes.
  • The trust they had in aspects of the production that were out of their control.

Here’s the official synopsis for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows:

Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael return to theaters this summer to battle bigger, badder villains, alongside April O’Neil (Megan Fox), Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett), and a newcomer: the hockey-masked vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell). After supervillain Shredder (Brian Tee) escapes custody, he joins forces with mad scientist Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry) and two dimwitted henchmen, Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (WWE Superstar Stephen “Sheamus” Farrelly), to unleash a diabolical plan to take over the world. As the Turtles prepare to take on Shredder and his new crew, they find themselves facing an even greater evil with similar intentions: the notorious Krang.
