It wasn't all that long ago -- just back in 2010 -- when the world became enraptured by the plight of 33 Chilean miners who became trapped in a 121-year-old San José copper-gold mine for 69 days. After its conclusion, the story seemed naturally made for film. There were many heroes involved in keeping the miners alive and in the rescue, leading to an almost unbelievably triumphant happy ending to what began as pure horror.

The 33, directed by Mexican filmmaker Patricia Riggen (Under the Same Moon) and written by Mikko Alanne (5 Days of War) and Jose Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries), details the events of the mine collapse, the plight and survival of the 33 men who were trapped 2,300 feet underground and 3 miles from the mine's only entrance, and the government's role in stepping in to devise a plan to free them. James Horner also created the sweeping score.

From the trailer, the film looks like it will be intense, emotional, and ultimately an uplifting telling -- exactly as it should be.

The 33 stars Antonio Banderas, Rodrigo Santoro, Lou Diamond Phillips, Juliette Binoche, Mario Casas, Gabriel Byrne, Jacob Vargas and Cote de Pablo.

The film is set for release in the U.S. some time later this year.
