Think you’ve had enough young adult book-to-film adaptations?  I’m telling you, at least keep an eye out for The 5th Wave.  In the Rick Yancey book, the world is ravaged by an alien attack.  During the first wave, the “Others” knock out the power.  During the second, they hit the coasts with devastating tsunamis.  For the third wave, they unleash a plague that wipes out the majority of the Earth’s human population and then, in order to target the survivors, the Others resort to ground tactics that force those who remain to adhere to one rule, do not trust anyone.  That’s where we find Chloe Moretz’s Cassie Sullivan, laying low and trying to survive on her own.  However, when she meets Evan Walker (Alex Roe), she’s forced to reassess her plan.  Does she continue surviving solo or does she team up with Evan so she can track down her little brother Sammy (Zackary Arthur)?

One, the film’s got a great cast including the aforementioned names, Maika Monroe, Liev Schreiber, Ron Livingston and Nick Robinson.  Two, the production has an insanely promising director at the helm, The Disappearance of Alice Creed's J. Blakeson.  And lastly, have you read Yancey’s book?  At this point there’s no stopping readers from digging for Hunger Games parallels, and there certainly are some, but it’s still an exhilarating, thoughtful spin on the alien invasion scenario that keeps you on edge from start to finish thanks to the ever-present threat of the invaders.

The 5th Wave is due to hit theaters exactly one year from today, on January 29, 2016, so in honor of the occasion, Sony posted a very brief teaser on the film’s Instagram account.  Check it out below:
