It's looking like Spencer Smythe will be involved in some capacity in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, although it will probably be a minor role.  A couple months ago, The Daily Bugle's Tumblr page had the report "that OsCorp stock has climbed four points, and that’s due in part because of 'significant advancements in robotics by the head of the engineering division, Spencer Smythe'."  For those who don't read the comics, Smythe is the inventor of the robotic Spider Slayers, whose purpose is to seek and destroy Spider-Man.  Now the Bugle has an interview with Smythe, and he comes off as arrogant, but also drops the line, "Well, if you want to catch the right fly, you have to spin the right web."

Hit the jump for the interview.  The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Dane DeHaan, Felicity JonesChris Cooper, B.J. Novak, Colm Feore, and Sally FieldThe Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in 3D on May 2, 2014.  The first trailer will be released tomorrow.

Via The Daily Bugle:

OsCorp Industries wants to usher in an age of robotics, and has pumped piles of cash into robotics research. My interview mission? Pry some secrets out of OsCorp’s Head Engineer, Spencer Smythe.

DB: Can you summarize your recent work in one word?

Smythe: Mobility.

DB: Elaborate, please.

Smythe: If you wanted an elaborate answer, why did you ask for a single word?

DB: Tell me something no one else knows about your research.

Smythe: We have made significant breakthroughs in the field of manned flight technology, fluidity of movement, speed and dexterity evinced by our larger robotic devices.

DB: Hardware or software?

Smythe: Both. One feeds the other. Better machines with enhanced artificial intelligence networks making informed, logical choices at greater speeds. Better bodies and better brains.

DB: And how do you see this being commercially applied?

Smythe (laughing): I don’t do marketing. Engineering innovation doesn’t result from a focus on revenue.

DB: There are rumors the NYPD is interested.

Smythe: Well, if you want to catch the right fly, you have to spin the right web.

DB: Very clever. One last thing, how is it working with your son?

Smythe: Alistair is a brilliant young engineer and I’m thrilled to see his career develop. I’d better watch my back or he’ll have my job before too long!

DB: Domo arigato.

We know there are at least three villains after Spider-Man in the upcoming sequel: Electro (Foxx), Rhino (Giamatti), and Green Goblin.  Also, the updated synopsis finished with "Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp."  We could see Smythe (perhaps Feore and Novak are playing the father-son inventors?) creating the Spider Slayers.  That's how viral campaigns usually work: they give the die-hard fans a bit of a look ahead, but nothing essential to understanding the plot.
