20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for the upcoming bestseller adaptation The Art of Racing in the Rain. Based on the book of the same name by Garth Stein, the film is told from the point of view of a witty and philosophical dog named Enzo, who is of course voiced by Kevin Costner. Enzo’s best friend and owner is Denny Swift (Milo Ventimiglia), an aspiring Formula One race car driver, and the story follows Denny’s journey of life, love, and loss—again, all through the eyes of his dog.
While there are some very sweet and cute moments in this trailer, you also just know this movie is going to be sad af. Especially when it’s billed as being from the studio that brought you Marley and Me. No one is a bigger dog person than I am, but I definitely do not enjoy watching stories about the short lives and mortality of man’s best friend. Let me live my life of blissful denial that my best pup will be with me forever, please.
Anyway, check out the Art of Racing in the Rain trailer and poster below. The film is directed by Simon Curtis (My Week with Marilyn) and written by Mark Bomback (War for the Planet of the Apes) and also stars Amanda Seyfried, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Gary Cole, Kathy Baker, and Martin Donovan. The Art of Racing in the Rain opens in theaters on August 9th.
