Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for the spy comedy The Brothers Grimsby. Previously titled Grimsby, the film stars Mark Strong as a British black ops spy who is forced to go on the run with his idiotic football hooligan brother, played by Sacha Baron Cohen. Directed by Now You See Me and The Incredible Hulk filmmaker Louis Letterier, this teaser trailer opens as a standard actioner, complete with first-person camera work, before smashing to the Cohen reveal with a somewhat humorous kicker.
This is but a brief teaser of what the film has in store, but knowing that it’s been in the can for a while, I can’t help but wonder if Sony started kicking itself when Spy opened to acclaim this past summer. The similarities are rather striking in this trailer, with Strong seemingly filling the role of “tough guy who tackles comedy” a la Jason Statham in Paul Feig’s hilarious action comedy. Will audiences turn out for something so similar less than a year after Spy or will Grimsby be different enough? Moreover, Cohen hasn’t made a big showcase piece since 2012’s misfire The Dictator, so I’m interested to see if there’s still a sizeable audience for the Borat comedian.
