It looks like The Crow remake has finally been resurrected, and this time it’s sticking. After Jason Momoa was linked to the role of Eric Draven, the Aquaman actor confirmed the casting, and now plans are officially underway to start production this January, according to The Wrap.

Let’s rewind a bit to fully appreciate the film’s long and tumultuous journey: the year was 2008 and Stephen Norrington signed on to direct the remake in the hopes of making it his first feature film since 2003’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Screenwriter Nick Cave came on the project for rewrites around 2010, and Mark Wahlberg was said to have been offered the title role later that year. Norrington was then replaced by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo as Bradley Cooper entered early negotiations to star. Both eventually dropped out of the project as a lawsuit involving Relativity Media and Miramax over the rights was being settled.

Through the years, director F. Javier Gutierrez cycled in and out, and the leading role passed between James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans, and Jack Huston. Now, it has a director in Corin Hardy and a star in Momoa. The actor posted a photo to Instagram of the two together with the hashtag for #sealthedeal.

We should all still maintain a healthy bit of skepticism because this isn’t the first time The Crow was said to be headed for production — something that was promised when Evans was on board — and we do have a few months before January, meaning this could still fall apart. However, the film seems closer than it’s ever been to going in front of cameras.

Alex Proyas helmed the 1994 film The Crow starring Brandon Lee as Eric, a man who returns from the dead as an avenging spirit after he and his fiancé are murdered. Momoa, though not the biggest name in Hollywood, still has his clout from Game of Thrones and will bring the more badass Aquaman to life in next year’s Justice League before headlining his own superhero movie for director James Wan.
