The onslaught of The Dark Tower movie coverage continues. Over the past few days, our first official looks at Idris Elba’s protagonist Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey’s villainous Randall Flagg have arrived along with a slew of information about the long-awaited film adaptation of Stephen King’s beloved book series. Ron Howard and Brian Grazer tried for years to get a feature film adaptation of The Dark Tower off the ground, but the source material proved so unwieldy that the only way they could think to do it was with a trilogy of films and two seasons of a limited TV series interspersed between. However, as we learned yesterday, this new iteration of The Dark Tower under the direction of Nikolaj Arcel is taking a different route: it’s a sequel.
Indeed, the new film will be a continuation of King’s story focusing on Roland’s final cycle in his quest to reach the aforementioned Dark Tower before it’s destroyed by a threatening force. The film also leaves out fan-favorite characters Eddie Dean and Susannah, although Arcel assured fans that those characters should be brought in eventually if the film franchise is successful enough to continue.
For now, we’ve got some more looks at Elba’s fantastic-looking gunslinger alongside Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers, a young boy who serves as a son-like figure for Roland and who aids him in his quest. Take a look at the photos below, via EW. The Dark Tower opens in theaters on February 17, 2017 and also stars Katheryin Winnick, Jackie Earle Haley, Abbey Lee Kershaw, and Fran Kranz.
