Tonight, during Marvel’s Comic-Con 2016 panel for the upcoming Netflix series Luke Cage, they dropped a surprise teaser for the next next Marvel Netflix series The Defenders, and it’s now online for all to see. The Defenders is the Avengers of the Marvel TV Universe, as it brings together the lead characters from all of the individual Netflix shows for one miniseries event. This is the idea that was set in stone when Marvel first moved forward with an adaptation of Daredevil on Netflix, which premiered to high praise and was followed by the tremendous Jessica Jones, with Luke Cage debuting in September and the last piece of the puzzle, Iron Fist, hitting Netflix sometime next year.

Daredevil showrunners Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie serve as executive producers and showrunners on The Defenders, and while the show hasn’t started filming just yet, this The Defenders trailer debuts the logo to the tune of "Come As You Are" and provides some tantalizing voiceover work from Scott Glenn, who plays Stick on Daredevil. Curiously enough, in addition to also unveiling the first trailer for Luke Cage, it was announced during the Marvel TV panel that Daredevil has been renewed for a third season, so as soon as Ramirez and Petrie wrap up The Defenders they’ll have to dive right into the new season of Daredevil—assuming they’re still serving as showrunners. It’s possible, given The Defenders schedule, someone else could be brought in to spearhead the writer’s room while Ramirez and Petrie focus on the team-up series.

Whatever the case, while The Defenders won’t premiere on Netflix for some time (2017, as confirmed by the trailer, but probably late 2017), this teaser trailer is a nice signpost of things to come, with a logline that’s at once vague and tantalizing: “Marvel’s The Defenders will unite Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, as they face their biggest threat yet.”
