‘The Divergent Series: Allegiant’ Tops Friday’s Box Office in Debut

     March 19, 2016

Allegiant, the third film in The Divergent Series, has debuted this week and is off to a good start with the top spot in Friday’s box office with almost $12 million. Unfortunately for the YA franchise film, weekend estimates put its total between $28 and $31 million, short of the previous film’s debut weekend tallies of $54.6 million for Divergent and $52.2 million for Insurgent. (The second part of the adaptation of the Veronica Roth novel “Allegiant”, titled The Divergent Series: Ascendant, opens June 9, 2017.) That estimated weekend total means that the live-action film will likely come in second to Disney’s animated film Zootopia.

The surprise critical and box office success of directors Byron Howard, Rich Moore, and Jared Bush’s family friendly animal film should bring in anywhere from $36 to $39 million this weekend, easily giving it the top spot once again. Additionally, Zootopia’s worldwide box office has crossed the $500 million mark with strong performances in international territories.

zootopia-box-officeRounding out the top five on Friday are Sony’s faith-based drama Miracles from Heaven in third with $4.2 million, aiming for $12 million over the weekend. Dan Trachtenberg’s 10 Cloverfield Lane out-performed expectations during its debut last weekend, and brought in over $3.5 million on its follow-up Friday. Deadpool, which has broken all sorts of records since its debut just before Valentine’s Day, stays in the top five this Friday with another two-and-a-quarter million in box office cash. The Merc with the Mouth continues to line his many pouches with cash, all building up the budget for the inevitable sequel.

Elsewhere, Sony Classics took The Bronze wide after playing at Sundance this January, but it only managed $130,000 in 1,167 theaters. Warner Bros. opened Jeff Nichols’ Midnight Special in limited release and grabbed $61,000 in five theaters.
