‘The Flash’: Hunter Zolomon and Zoom’s Comic Book Origins

     March 1, 2016

I want to start this off by saying that Hunter Zolomon may very well be my favorite villain of all time, and I hope that this write-up is able to do that idea justice. If you’ve been watching The Flash, you know that this season has been all about the multiverse — specifically, the adventures between Earths 1 and 2. A new threat in the form of the black-Flash-suit-wearing Zoom has seeped into Barry and S.T.A.R. Labs’ lives, with the villain throwing threats from Earth-2 in their path. Zoom has shown that he is in fact the fastest man alive, running circles around anyone who gets in his way, including Barry Allen.

While the mystery of Zoom’s identity has been dangling over viewers’ heads for most of the season, the bombshell dropped last week was that Zoom is Hunter Zolomon (or so Flash EP Andrew Kreisberg told EW. But who is The Man in the Iron Mask?) Zolomon has a rich history in the comics as part of The Flash’s world, and since we’re all missing The Flash while it’s on hiatus, we decided to make the wait a little easier by providing a walkthrough of who Hunter Zolomon’s Zoom is in the comics, and how he became arguably the greatest villain the Flash has ever known.
