The stellar word-of-mouth has me especially eager to see Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing's The Gallows, but I can't say I was wowed by the film's first full trailer. However, Warner Bros. UK just unveiled the very first clip from the film and it's above and beyond that promo. The Gallows centers on a group of teens who attempt to resurrect a failed school play 20 years after the accidental death of the lead actor, and this new clip shows exactly what happened to him.

What makes the scene especially disturbing is the point of view. Who hasn't watched a home video-style recording of a school play before? The visual feels eerily real and even worse (or better?), the prop malfunction seems plausible. Based on the film's trailer, it looks as though The Gallows will have a good deal of running around shaky-cam style, but if there are enough disturbingly simple, grounded moments like this and the one featured in the teaser trailerThe Gallows really could be an especially unsettling experience.

Check out the very first The Gallows clip and a new TV spot below. The film stars Cassidy Gifford, Ryan Shoos, Reese Mishler and Pfeifer Brown, and is due in theaters on July 10th.

Here’s the synopsis for The Gallows:

Twenty years after an accident caused the death of the lead actor during a high school play, students at the same small town school resurrect the failed stage production in a misguided attempt to honor the anniversary of the tragedy—but ultimately find out that some things are better left alone.
