Check out the music video for Billy Boyd's The Last Goodbye, the end credits song for the franchise's final film, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

Billy Boyd may not be getting any face time in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, but a music video for his end credits song “The Last Goodbye” just hit the web and not only does it include Boyd’s performance, but select clips from all six Middle-earth films as well. Even as someone who hasn’t been particularly enthusiastic about the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies, the piece is still a beautiful send off that makes me look back and appreciate the time I got to spend with these characters.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies doesn’t hit theaters until December 17th, but the soundtrack with “The Last Goodbye” will be available on December 9th.

Here’s what Boyd told EW about working on “The Last Goodbye:”

“We had to get the song just right, to send the audience out of the movie theater in the most perfect way we could. But I don’t think it was until I was sitting on the long flight down to New Zealand that I started to really think about what the song would be. Luckily all the Middle-earth movies were on the flight so I could remind myself of them as I flew south.”

But of course he couldn’t jump into developing the song without catching the last installment first. However, even after seeing The Battle of the Five Armies, the process was much more so about concluding the franchise as a whole rather than just wrapping up the final film:

“After seeing the film, I went to my room and I started to put down some ideas, and along with Fran and Philippa, we started to sculpt the song we thought the movie needed. A lot of ideas took us to dead ends or we found the tone wasn’t just right. I think we discovered very quickly this wasn’t just a song to end The Battle of the Five Armies—it was a song to say goodbye to Middle-earth.”

Boyd also added:

“The Lord of the Rings films were such a special time for me in many ways—working with Pete, Fran and Philippa, being in New Zealand, being part of Professor Tolkien’s work or even just the incredible friends I made. And being asked to go back to that, to work in that wonderful fantasy world again and to be singing the song that says goodbye to Middle-earth for everyone involved and the fans who took this beautiful journey with us is truly a great, great honor.”
