Fillory isn’t exactly the land of fairies and fun times. With Season 2 of The Magicians awaiting us in the new year, the first trailer has arrived to tease many new and old dangers along the way — including a worrisome faun, a cryptic puzzle, and the infamous Beast.

After the gang from Brakebills University faced off against the moth-covered Beast, they barely escaped with their lives as the power-hungry Julia (Stella Maeve) went off with the magical terrorist who’s been plaguing their lives since day one. Now the group finds themselves in Fillory, the mystical realm once thought to be just a work of fiction.

Here, we see the group scattered as The Beast plots. Worse yet, magic is dying. According to the still-blind Dean Fogg (Rick Worthy), “Magic is dying…If magic dies here, it dies everywhere…The fate of the world is in your hands.”

Jason Ralph (Quentin), Olivia Taylor Dudley (Alice), Arjun Gupta (William), Hale Appleman (Eliot), and Summer Bishil (Margo) all return, so we know their characters survived. But how will they now stay together as they search for some great power to defeat The Beast and save the world? Putting their fates in doubt is the ominous, Darwinian line from our villain: “You’re powerful or you’re weak. If you’re powerful, you will survive.”

Side note, at the 1:18 mark, I was caught off guard by what appears to be Eliot and Julia, or maybe Margo, sharing a steamy kiss. Eliot was gay in the books, so now apparently he’s bisexual? According to Appleman during New York Comic Con last year, this version of the character “doesn’t identify [his sexuality] in any particular way. It’s that he’s insatiably hungry for vices to fill a void he cannot fill.”

Earlier, Syfy released the first scene from Season 2, as well as a behind-the-scenes look inside Fillory. In them, Quentin encounters a mysterious woman — a “healer and gardening enthusiast,” as she’s called — who is spotted in the trailers offering a warning about some of the Fillorian creatures. At the very least, we know the new episodes will begin right where we left off, so we won’t have to wait too long to fill in the gaps.

The Magicians Season 2 will premiere on Syfy this January 25th.
