The unstoppable Ridley Scott is set to have his fourth movie in as many years with The Martian due for release this November. The film, based on the novel by Andy Weir, stars Matt Damon as an astronaut who’s abandoned on Mars after his team thinks he died in a sandstorm; he must then find a way to return home despite limited resources and the unforgiving environment.

While I expect it will be a while until we see a trailer or even some official images, we do have a nice first look at Damon as well as a practical rover in the background. The image comes from Andy Weir’s Facebook page, and while it doesn’t tell us much about Scott’s take on the movie or how Damon will approach the character, it does tell us that if you lose a Super Bowl bet to the actor, he’ll make you wear a Patriots shirt for a year. Matt Damon is cruel.

Check out The Martian image below. The film opens November 25th, and also stars Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Donald Glover, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, and Michael Peña.

Here’s the synopsis for Andy Weir’s The Martian:

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next.

Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?
