Anticipation from audiences and Oscar buzz continues to build for Alejandro G. Iñárritu's The Revenant, the Mexican filmmaker's official follow-up to the highly regarded, not particularly good Birdman, and now we have our first TV spot for the revenge tale. As those who have been looking forward to the film (this writer included) will remember, the film pits Leonardo DiCaprio against Tom Hardy, who deserted DiCaprio's character and seemingly killed his son in an act of cowardice.

As excited as I am to see the film, there's still the sneaking suspicion that the latest from Inarritu will, like Birdman, be more a showcase for the tremendous skills of DP Emmanuel Lubezki than anything resembling a daring film about faith and masculinity. Mind you, Inarritu has yet to make a truly gripping film since 21 Grams, and that films energy was due largely to the cast. The same very well may be true of The Revenant, as the images are the most immediately spellbinding element of the trailers and this TV spot, while the dramatic pulp of the story has yet to be totally hashed out. We will have to wait and see, but for now, check out the new TV spot for The Revenant below:

Check out the official synopsis for The Revenant below:

Deep in the uncharted American wilderness, hunter Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is severely injured and left for dead by a traitorous member of his team, John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). With sheer will as his only weapon, Glass must navigate a hostile environment, a brutal winter, and warring Native American tribes in relentless quest to survive and exact vengeance on Fitzgerald.
