Our first look at the English-language remake of The Secret in Their Eyes has arrived, featuring co-stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Julia Roberts as FBI agents Ray and Jess. Their lives, as well as the life of their District Attorney supervisor, Claire, played by Nicole Kidman, are turned upside down when Jess’s daughter is found murdered, for seemingly no reason. Years later, their inability to bring the killer to justice still haunts Ray—until he finds a new lead that may prove integral to catching the murderer and giving his colleague (and himself) some peace. The film is the latest from writer-director Billy Ray (Shattered Glass, Captain Philips), who loosely adapted the script from Juan José Campanella’s Oscar-winning film of the same name. The sterling cast also includes Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), Michael Kelly (House of Cards), Don Harvey, and Lyndon Smith.

The first Secret in Their Eyes remake image isn’t particularly revealing, as it only shows the co-leads staring at a computer that went out of style with chain wallets and Rage Against the Machine t-shirts. That being said, the somber, ever-so-angry tone of Campanella’s The Secret in Their Eyes suggests a perfect fit for Ray, who has made his name on moody, politically charged depictions of remarkable, recent events. The film is set for release on October 23rd, 2015, right in time for Oscar consideration.

Here's the official synopsis for The Secret in Their Eyes remake:

A tight-knit team of rising FBI investigators – Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Jess (Julia Roberts), along with their District Attorney supervisor Claire (Nicole Kidman) – is suddenly torn apart when they discover that Jess’s teenage daughter has been brutally and inexplicably murdered.

Now, thirteen years later, after obsessively searching every day for the elusive killer, Ray finally uncovers a new lead that he’s certain can permanently resolve the case, nail the vicious murderer, and bring long-desired closure to his team. No one is prepared, however, for the shocking, unspeakable secret that will reveal the enduring, destructive effects of personal vengeance on the human soul.

Interweaving past and present, this deeply layered mystery explores the murky boundaries between justice and revenge, and asks the question: how far would you go to right an unfathomable wrong?
