The first official image of the revamped and modernized smurf characters for the upcoming movie The Smurfs has hit the net. The new film adaptation of the beloved ‘80s Hannah Barbera cartoon and original Belgian comic series will use both computer animation and live action for on its 3D release on August 3, 2011. Papa Smurf’s looks smurfing smurf with his new makeover!
More smurf news( including one major plot change) after the jump.
In the new film, favourite smurf characters Grouchy Smurf, Papa Smurf and Clumsy Smurf (pictured) as well as Smurfette, Brainy Smurf and new character Gutsy Smurf, stumble upon a magical portal that transports them into modern day Central Park. Hot on the smurfs’ trail is the evil Gargamel (Hank Azaria) and the smurfs turn to a married couple (Neil Patrick Harris and Glee’s Jayma Mays) to help them make their merry way home.
In the classic Smurfs cartoons Gargamel was always trying to capture the smurfs in order to cook and eat them, but in the new film smurfs won’t be on the menu for Gargamel; instead he’ll be trying to imprison the smurfs to use in his magic.
On the potential lightening up of the story producer Jordan Kerner told USA Today:
“We all wondered whether we would be making a family version of Sweeney Todd”
A trailer for the film is said to be released this Thursday — we’ll post it when we see it.
Here’s the official synopsis:
In the 3D August 3, 2011 release, the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village and they tumble from their magical world into ours – in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.
