Starz has released a new trailer for the upcoming series The Spanish Princess, and fans of other Starz series The White Queen and Outlander will find plenty to love. This new limited series is based on the best-selling Philippa Gregory novels The Constant Princess and The King’s Curse and chronicles the early years of Catherine of Aragon, who has a historical reputation as an unwanted and burdensome wife, but who showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham wanted to depict as a strong, driven young woman and shrewd political figure.

Indeed, this fresh take on the historical figure finds the young Princess of Spain arriving in England with Prince Arthur (played by The Kid Who Would Be King standout Angus Imrie), finally fulfilling her promise of ascending to the English throne. But when Prince Arthur dies suddenly, Catherine’s claim to the throne is in doubt. She spurs herself into action, setting her sights on young Prince Harry (Ruairi O’Connor), who eventually became King Henry VIII.

Charlotte Hope fills the role of Catherine, who fans may recognize as Ramsay Bolton’s vengeful girlfriend Myranda on Game of Thrones, and who appears to be delivering a strong lead performance here. Frost and Graham previously steered the acclaimed Starz limited series The White Queen and The White Princess, and with The Spanish Princess, they aim to not only shine a light on the women of this era, but also the lives of people of color living and working in 16th century London, so this proves to be a fruitful area of exploration.

This trailer is solid and intriguing, showcasing the things that Starz seems to lean into with its historical series—like shirtless British dudes and steamy sex scenes, but also complex and confident female characters. Frost and Graham are two-for-two so far, and there’s no reason to believe they’ll let fans down with their third series.

Check out the new trailer for The Spanish Princess below. The limited series debuts on Starz on May 5th.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Spanish Princess:

Returning to the world of Tudor royal court intrigue, “The Spanish Princess” is a vivid and captivating story told uniquely from the point of view of the women, which also sheds light on a previously untold corner of history: the lives of people of color, living and working in 16th century London.

Catherine of Aragon (Charlotte Hope) is the strong-willed young Princess of Spain, who has been promised the English throne since she was a child. She arrives in a grey, rain-lashed England with her glorious and diverse court including her ladies-in-waiting Lina (Stephanie Levi-John) – a Spanish noble of African Iberian descent – and the sweet and free-spirited Rosa (Nadia Parkes). When her husband Prince Arthur dies suddenly, the throne seems lost to Catherine until she devises an audacious plan and sets her sights on the new heir, the charismatic and headstrong Prince Harry who will one day rule as King Henry VIII.
