The Vatican Tapes has been in the works since way back in 2009 when Man on Wires James Marsh was attached to direct. However, that rendition of the project never panned out and just last year, it was announced that Mark Neveldine (Crank) was set to helm the film about a 27-year-old woman named Angela Holmes (Olivia Dudley). All of sudden, she starts to notice that she’s got a devastating effect on those around her, causing injury and death. Father Lozano (Michael Peña) steps in to investigate and deems her possessed. When the Vatican assigns Vicar Imani (Djimon Hounsou) and Cardinal Bruun (Peter Andersson) to exorcise the demon, they come to realize that it’s “an ancient satanic force more powerful than they imagined.”

It’s not easy to make a standout exorcism movie anymore and there’s really nothing about this new The Vatican Tapes trailer to suggest that writer Christopher Borrelli came up with any mind-blowing novelties, but Neveldine’s a guy who likes to go to the extreme, so hopefully he can put a fresh spin on the situation - especially when it comes to the more violent, action-packed sequences. The film also stars Dougray Scott, Kathleen Robertson, John Patrick Amedori, Cas Anvar and Alex Sparrow, and is due in theaters on May 22nd.
