From Season 6 to 11 of AMC's The Walking Dead, the character of Negan has been a tough one for viewers to swallow. After all, in his very first appearance, he brutally murders two fan favorites with a barb-wired bat named Lucille after his late wife. He then proceeds to subjugate Rick Grimes' community for several episodes until they fight it out in a battle that could have easily ended with one or both of them dead.

Over the seasons, although he's undoubtedly tested the limits of characters like Rick, Daryl Dixon, and especially Maggie Rhea, Negan has done a lot to redeem himself and become a trusted community member, picking vegetables as Carl once envisioned. Still, for every redemption, this misunderstood TWD antihero has done something to pull at his remaining last straws.

A significant redeemable moment for Negan came in Season 10 when Carol enlists him to kill the group's current enemy, Alpha, who had severed the heads of several Alexandrians, including Carol's adoptive son Henry.

Despite their past intimate relationship, Negan lures Alpha in before slicing her throat. He then reports back to Carol by rolling Alpha's severed, zombified head her way.

During an almost-sweet moment between Negan and Maggie in Season 11 Part 1, Negan's dark side returns. Despite his best efforts to be nice to Maggie — assuring her he understands how she feels and reminisces about his Saviors — their conversation ends with Negan going in for the symbolic kill.

When Maggie asks Negan if he regretted his actions on the night he murdered Glenn and Abraham, Negan retorts, "If I could do it all over again… I'd have killed every last one of you."

He Saved Judith From The Snowstorm (Redeemed)

Negan And Judith On The Walking Dead

Much like his strange but undeniable bond with Carl Grimes, Negan has also taken a liking to Carl's little sister Judith. In Season 9, when Judith took off from the group to save Dog during a snowstorm, Negan went out to rescue them both.

This wouldn't be the first time Negan bonded with a child, the first being Carl, and most recently his friendship with Alpha's daughter Lydia, who never blamed Negan for her mother's death.

He Escaped His Cell (Not Redeemed)

Negan On The Walking Dead

The show took a literal page from the comics with this one. In Season 10, when the cell he's been stuck in accidentally ends up unlocked, Negan escapes and makes his way back to his old stomping ground, The Sanctuary.

Although he ultimately returns to his cell, his visit to The Sanctuary gives viewers a glimpse of the old Negan — albeit a little grayer — when he finds himself a leather jacket and a brand-new bat.

He Saved Maggie From A Reaper (Redeemed)

Negan On The Walking Dead 3

Since Maggie's return at the end of Season 10, all Negan has worried about is Maggie attempting to kill him to avenge her husband's death. Their rivalry has made Negan skeptical of Maggie's intentions and less inclined to help the leader.

But in a Season 11 Part 2 episode, when Maggie struggles to escape from a murderous Reaper, it's a swing from Negan that saves her life, continuing his redemption to the viewers, but still not to Maggie.

He Left Maggie To Die On The Train (Not Redeemed)

Maggie On The Walking Dead

In one of the first Season 11 Part 1 episodes, Negan's redemption is seriously tested when he joins Maggie and a group to find food. When they end up in a subway and Maggie fights for her life when she hangs off the edge of the train, about to fall into a pit of walkers, Negan must make a decision: save Maggie or walk away.

When he chooses the latter and Maggie falls to her supposed death, it makes Negan's new and improved character a lot less likable, despite his reasons for what he did.

He Helped Take Down Beta (Redeemed)

Negan And Beta On The Walking Dead

Negan sat in a strange in-between of Alexandrians and The Whispers for Season 10, but despite befriending Beta, Negan is partly to thank for the enemy's takedown.

In the gory and gruesome scene from Season 10, it's Negan who initially attempts to kill Beta until he's recognized under his Whisperer mask. When the two get in a fight on the ground, Beta is distracted long enough for Daryl to sneak up and stab Beta through both eyes, ending The Whisperers' reign.

He Joined The Whisperers (Not Redeemed)

After escaping Alexandria, Negan finds The Whisperers, where he asks to become a member. Yet, it's not until after Alpha seduces him in the woods that Negan is officially inducted into The Whisperers, despite Beta's better judgment.

After spending years as a prisoner at Alexandria and befriending young Judith, Negan's betrayal by joining their current enemies is both surprising and irredeemable.

He Destroyed Lucille (Redeemed)

Negan Burning Lucille On The Walking Dead

Negan's most significant redeemable moment had to be in one of the best episodes of the series titled "Here's Negan." In the Season 10 finale that takes a look back at Negan's origin story, what he did before the outbreak and what happened to his wife, we also see how he got his hands on his precious baseball bat he named Lucille.

The bat that killed Glenn and Abraham was the bat that was named after Negan's late wife, and this episode ends with him ultimately burning it, presumably symbolizing the start of a brand new Negan.

He Uttered Glenn's Name (Not Redeemed)

Negan On The Walking Dead 2

It wasn't leaving Maggie to die or admitting he wishes he killed them all when he had the chance. It was a simple sentence in the Season 11 premiere that wholly ruined any chance of Negan being redeemed by both the characters and the viewers.

While in a fight with Maggie, he tells her he won't let her "drag me through the mud, filth, and slime to put me down like a dog, like Glenn was," earning him a punch in the face from Daryl.
