Magnolia has released The Wave trailer. The disaster film follows a geologist (Kristoffer Joner) who discovers that a tidal wave is about to hit his small town and attempts to save his family from the oncoming catastrophe.

While one tidal wave may seem like small potatoes compared to the worldwide destruction a director like Roland Emmerich likes to dish out, The Wave is still an impressive movie based on its origin country and certainly its budget. I caught the film at Fantastic Fest, and director Roar Uthaug does a good job creating a lot of build up to unleashing the wave and then trying to find a way to make his characters wade through its fallout. The movie doesn’t reinvent the disaster genre, but it plays by its rules very well.

The experienced geologist Kristian Eikfjord has accepted a job offer out of town. He is getting ready to move from the city of Geiranger with his family when he and his colleagues measure small geological changes in the underground. Kristian gets worried, and his worst nightmare is about to come true when the alarm goes off and the disaster is inevitable. With less than 10 minutes to react, it becomes a race against time to save as many as possible, including his own family.
