The filmmaking duo behind two of the most fun films of the last few years are heading back into horror territory. THR reports that director Adam Wingard will helm The Woods for Lionsgate from a script by his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett. Wingard and Barrett previously burst onto the scene with the inventive 2011 “home invasion” horror pic You’re Next, which they followed-up with last year’s incredibly fun John Carpenter riff The Guest, which was more in the vein of an action thriller.

Plot details for The Woods are being kept firmly under wraps, but THR adds that the story involves “a group of college students on a camping trip who discover they are not alone.” A simple enough and well-worn premise to be sure, but in the hands of Wingard and Barrett we can safely assume we’ll be in for something a bit different. You’re Next was full of both excellent scares and pleasant surprises, and The Guest had a similar degree of freshness while exploring a wholly different genre altogether. While the latter film somewhat underperformed in theaters, I do hope it finds an audience on home video because it is so much fun.

Wingard has already been busy since the release of The Guest, however, as he most recently directed the pilot for Cinemax's Outcast, which is based on a graphic novel by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman.

Production on The Woods is looking to begin this spring, with Wingard planning on filling the cast out with unknowns in the hopes of “giving the movie maximum scares.” Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Keith Calder, and Jessica Wu will produce.
