With Let Him Go now playing in theaters, I recently had the opportunity to talk with writer-director Thomas Bezucha about making the fiery thriller. Based on the novel of the same name by Larry Watson, Let Him Go follows a retired sheriff named George Blackledge (Kevin Costner) and his wife Margaret (Diane Lane) who set out to rescue their young grandson from the clutches of a dangerous family living off the grid in the Dakotas, headed by matriarch Blanche Weboy (Lesley Manville). When they discover the Weboys have no intention of letting the child go, George and Margaret are left with no choice but to fight for their family. Let Him Go also stars Jeffrey Donovan, Kayli Carter, Booboo Stewart and Will Brittain.

During the interview, Bezucha talked about the great chemistry between Costner and Lane, what he learned from early screenings that impacted the finished film, getting Michael Giacchino to do the score, what it was like meeting with Costner for the first time to do the movie, and more.

Check out what he had to say below and you can read Jeff Sneider’s review of Let Him Go here. You can also click here for my interview with Kevin Costner.

Thomas Bezucha:

  • Does Let Him Go taking place in an alternate Man of Steel universe?
  • The great chemistry between Costner and Lane.
  • What was it like sitting down with Costner to try and get him to do the movie?
  • How Costner’s character doesn’t speak a lot in the film.
  • What did he learn from early screenings that impacted the finished film?
  • Getting Michael Giacchino to do the score and his first western.
