While Syfy may suffer from the occasional Sharknado, every once in a while they attempt to bring some real science-fiction onto the screen.  Case in point: The Expanse, a new series adapted from James S.A. Corey's "Leviathan Wakes" series.  The story follows a veteran detective and the captain of a ship in their search for a missing girl ... oh, did I mention that it happens 200 years in the future and takes place in space?  Yeah.  There's asteroid mining, space colonies, revolutionaries, and interplanetary intrigue.  And who better to lead this series?  Mr. Thomas Jane.  Hit the jump for more.

THR reports that Jane will lead The Expanse as Detective Miller, "a world-weary, a native of the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter [who works] for a corporate security force operating as the law in the Belt. Ragged, in search of something even he can't identify, Miller remains a dedicated cop with great instincts who discovers a newfound sense of purpose when he’s put in charge of the investigation into a missing heiress."  The other lead in this series, as long as the show follows the books, is Jim Holden, an executive officer and rebel sympathizer aboard a mining ship that happens upon the derelict ship The Scopuli, which houses a secret that could affect the entire solar system.  Syfy picked up the series with a 10-episode commitment in the hopes of restoring their Battlestar Galactica glory days.

Here's the full synopsis of the first book (via Amazon):

Humanity has colonized the solar system - Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond - but the stars are still out of our reach.

Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, The Scopuli, they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for - and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.

Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to The Scopuli and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.

Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations - and the odds are against them. But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the universe.
