This is good news as far as I’m concerned. Edge of Tomorrow wound up as one of my favorite films of 2014 (I’m still kicking myself for resisting it for so long) so any new collaboration between Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman automatically earns the benefit of the doubt from me. The two are in talks to reteam for Mena, a drug trafficking movie being set up at Imagine. Almost as cool? Cruise gets to play a pilot again. Almost as cool as that? It takes place in the prime Cruise decade, the 1980’s.
The genesis point for the film comes from a spec script by Gary Spinelli that sold to Universal last year for seven figures. Hit the jump for more on Tom Cruise and Doug Liman reteaming for Mena.
Per Deadline (who broke the story):
The spec is a fact-based tale about Barry Seal, a pilot who, in the 1980s, was a gun runner, and drug trafficker who transported contraband for the CIA and the Medellin cartel. He was eventually shot to death by the latter in Baton Rouge. The title refers to Mena, Arkansas, where a lot of the illegal activity took place, under the noses of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and then-Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton.
Sounds juicy. Also, didn’t know Mena was a city in Arkansas. The more you know! If all goes well the film will shoot this year.
