In the days when all any book lover could talk about was Dan Brown, director Ron Howard brought The Da Vinci Code to life based on the author’s best-selling book. A sequel, Angels & Demons, soon followed, and Howard is now back to continue the legend of sleuth symbologist Robert Langdon in Inferno. In the first batch of movie stills, Tom Hanks returns as the lead character, accompanied by his new partner-in-crime, Star Wars: Rogue One’s Felicity Jones.
While Langdon was previously enthralled by the search for the Holy Grail and the Illuminati, his attention now falls on the famed epic poem from Dante Alighieri, "The Inferno." The images, found via Indiewire, see Jones as Dr. Sienna Brooks, Omar Sy (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as Christoph Bruder, Sidse Babett Knudsen (The Duke of Burgundy) as Dr. Elizabeth Sinskey, and Irrfan Khan (Jurassic World) as Harry Sims “The Provost.” Not shown among these cast members is Ben Foster (Warcraft), said to be the villain.
While Howard’s The Da Vinci Code did well in further popularizing Brown’s cinematic universe, if you will, Angels & Demons fumbled a bit at the box office and in terms of critical reception. That was six years ago, and interest in this property may have dried up. Though writer David Koepp thinks this could be the best one yet. “Inferno I’m very excited about,” he told Collider at the beginning of the year. “I think it could be the best of the Langdon stories.”
Inferno was once scheduled for release on December 18 of this year, but will now open on October 14, 2016. Check out the first images below:
