Tom Holland to Star in the Russo Brothers’ Next Movie ‘Cherry’

tom-holland-russo-brothers-cherryJoe and Anthony Russo‘s Avengers: Endgame, a surefire box office hit when it arrives on April 26th, will be the culmination of the brothers’ work in the MCU so far, but it’ll also open up other possibilities for their creative expression. Enter: Cherry, a true-life adaptation of author Nico Walker‘s semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. It tells of an Iraq War veteran who comes home only to struggle with PTSD and opioid addiction. In order to fund said addiction, he begins robbing banks. Though the narrator and protagonist of the story are unnamed, the events are heavily based on Walker’s own experiences; he’s currently behind bars and has been since 2013, but is scheduled to be released in 2020, just in time to see Tom Holland play the part on the big screen.

Variety reports that Holland and the Russos will reunite for Cherry. (Though they also report that this is the first non-Marvel feature directing gig for the duo, which is only true if you ignore You, Me and Dupree; Welcome to Collinwood; and Pieces.) It will, however, be the brothers’ first feature film following up on their success in the Captain America and Avengers franchises, as we wrote up back in August. The Russos acquired the rights to Cherry for $1 million through their AGBO studio and will direct from a script by Jessica Goldberg (The Path). The current plan is to start filming this summer for a 2020 release.

The Russos also have a number of other productions on their slate already, though most of them have the brothers acting as producers behind the scenes. Notably, there’s a TV adaptation of the cult classic 1979 film The Warriors in the works, as well as a series adaptation of the horror video game Little Nightmares. As for Holland, fans will flock to the big screen to see his return as Peter Parker and his alter ego in Spider-Man: Far From Home this July 5th after, presumably, seeing him play the part in Avengers: Endgame. Outside of the MCU, Holland lends his voice to Spies in Disguise this September and has the 2020 releases The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, Chaos Walking, The Devil All the Time, and Disney/Pixar’s Onward on tap.
