Because I've grown tired of never following through on my New Year's resolutions to get in shape, this year I'm trying something more attainable: to keep a list of all the movies I watch in 2014. Many thanks to my colleague, Mr. Goldberg, for throwing out a Letterboxd recommendation in this collage of films he watched in 2013. I joined the site shortly after reading his rec and think it's a great way not only to keep a viewing diary (and actually stick with a resolution for once) but also to create/share your own lists and communicate with fellow movie lovers. If you want to keep up with my 2014 watch diary, check out my Top 10 of 2013, and/or my most anticipated for 2014 then hit me up on Letterboxd by clicking here.

Shameless self-promotion aside, the first Top 5 of 2014 features a recap of Matt, Adam, and Dave's Top 10 of 2013 lists, a new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2video interviews for Inside Llewyn Davis with Oscar Isaac and more, the great first trailer for writer/director Gareth Evans' The Raid 2: Berandal, and a new installment of Cinemath that breaks down the 2013 box office. Continue reading for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

1. Our Favorite Movies of 2013

Given that you don't take them as gospel, annual "Best of" movie lists can be a fun way to compare your own cinematic tastes against those of your favorite critics, movie bloggers, peers, etc. If you're like me, you also like to use these lists not as an echo chamber but as a chance to find gems that you may have missed for whatever reason over the course of the year. While my personal Top 10 can be found on Letterboxd, three guys whose opinions I respect a ton can be found right here: Matt's Top 10 Films of 2013, Adam's Top 10, and Dave's Top 10.

2. New Trailer for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

The opening hours of 2014 watched Sony Pictures drop a new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and while it clocks in at only a minute, it features just enough one-liners from the wallcrawler and Electro action to warrant mention and make me hesitant to ever visit Times Square during New Year's Eve.

3. INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS Interviews with Oscar Isaac and More

Topping several year-end lists that I've read, Inside Llewyn Davis is on my must-see list for 2014. The Coen Brothers' penchant for delivering excellent soundtracks aside, the pic will almost certainly strike an emotional chord with me in its portrayal of a musician struggling to survive in an industry that often times rewards talent with one dead-end after another. For more on the film, check out Steve's video interviews with Oscar Isaac, Stark Sands, T-Bone Burnett, F. Murray Abraham, Carey Mulligan, and Adam Driver who also addresses rumors that he might play Nightwing in Batman vs. Superman.

4. First Trailer for THE RAID 2: BERANDAL

My most anticipated premiere at Sundance this year is easily The Raid 2: Berandal. Like many, I was enthralled with the action and fighting sequences of the original and can't wait to see what writer/director Gareth Evans has in store for the sequel. If this glorious first trailer is any indication, it's going to be yet another beautifully brutal climb to the top.

5. Cinemath: Year-End Report on the 2013 Box Office

iron man 3 graph

If 2007's critically loathed Joel Schumacher and Jim Carrey team-up The Number 23 taught us anything, it's that numbers have meaning. Assuming you didn't check out immediately after being reminded that film existed, if you love breaking down box office takes, seeing which movies had the most staying power in theaters, which experienced the most success overseas, etc., then you'll be hard-pressed to find an article more finely tuned to your tastes than Brendan's latest Cinemath installment, Year-End Report on the 2013 Box Office.
