Now available on VOD is writer/director Patrick Brice's bizarre comedy The Overnight. The film premiered at Sundance earlier this year, made the rounds on the festival circuit, and enjoyed a theatrical release back in June. You may remember Brice's name from when I wrote about his other feature, Creep starring himself and Mark Duplass, a few weeks ago. The Overnight leans more toward comedy whereas Creep sits firmly in the horror/suspense camp, but Brice keeps the motivation of his leads tightly under wraps in both. I'll be interested to see if the element of mystery becomes a recurring trait in Brice's future projects as he uses it deftly in his first two features within two different genres.

While Brice is certainly a talent to keep an eye on, the real strength of The Overnight lies in its cast. The vast majority of the film is set during a dinner party in which Adam Scott, Taylor Schilling, Jason Schwartzman, and Judith Godrèche are the only guests. Over the course of the night the overall mood of the party bounces between funny, pleasant, light, cathartic, odd, and flat-out weird. It's a credit to their performances that no matter how strange things get between their characters, we never stop caring about how the night will end and what lessons they'll take from it. While some of the situations dance with the extreme, the final product is an honest, funny look at marriage and the all too common insecurities that relationships struggle with.

Recommendations aside, let's get to this week's Top 5:

TIFF 2015 Coverage

This is the time of year where I remember how it feels to know that many of my colleagues are at the Toronto International Film Festival and I, in fact, am not. The sharp twinge of jealousy that truth creates is only consoled by the fact that at least I have a lot of early reviews to sift through (most notably Sicario and The Martian thus far). Click here to browse all of our TIFF 2015 coverage to date and keep checking back throughout next week for more from Toronto.

King Kong vs. Godzilla In the Works?

If you're a fan of shared movie universes and watching two heavyweights duke it out then this news is for you. This week Legendary Pictures moved Kong: Skull Island from Universal to Warner Bros., reportedly as a way of building momentum toward a new King Kong vs. Godzilla battle pic. This news reminds me that 2003's Freddy vs. Jason was a movie that 17-year-old me couldn't wait to see. I can only hope that the prospect of a new Kong vs. Godzilla film gives someone else out there that same level of excitement.

'The Visit' Coverage

M. Night Shyamalan is a two-time Oscar nominated writer/director. Just typing that sentence feels strange given that the filmmaker has been a critical punching bag for the past decade or so. That said, it only takes one good film to start a new, more positive trend and I'm hopeful that The Visit will do that for the once highly regarded talent. For more on the movie, read Matt's review and watch Tommy's video interviews with Shyamalan & producer Jason Blum and the lovely Kathryn Hahn.

First Trailer for 'Krampus'

Director Michael Dougherty's 2007 film Trick 'r Treat has earned annual watching status at my house. I'll more or less watch anything that has Adam Scott in it. Put those two seemingly unrelated things together and the result is that I can't wait to check out Dougherty's next feature, Krampus. Watch the first trailer and tell me that you're not immediately in the holiday spirit.

42nd Telluride Film Festival Coverage

We started with me being envious of my colleague's film festival fun and we'll end there as well. This past week our Brian Formo has peppered the site with coverage from the 42nd Telluride Film Festival in Colorado. Click here to browse all of his coverage, including his Steve Jobs review, and join me in admiring this beautiful event poster from champion illustrator Laurent Durieux. Classy as hell.
