Top Gun 2 continues to operate more as a concept than a film that’s likely to happen any time soon. Tom Cruise has no shortage of films to make, he’s riding high on the Mission: Impossible franchise, he’s working on another sequel right now with Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, and he might star in the moon heist thriller Luna Park as well. Meanwhile, the last we heard on Top Gun 2 was that the film would explore drone warfare and the end of the fighter pilot era, but that’s it. There’s no director on board or any more details beyond making sure they’ve got Cruise playing Maverick.

And now they’ve also got Val Kilmer if they want him. The actor took to Facebook last night saying that he’s been approached to reprise his role of Iceman:

I just got offered #topgun2 - not often you get to say "yes" without reading the script..."It's starring Gene... Posted by Val Kilmer on Monday, November 16, 2015

Although a brief typo made it sound like Francis Ford Coppola and Gene Hackman were also involved, Kilmer clarified that he invoked their names to provide example of times when you say “Yes” to a project without reading the script. So if you’re wondering how he came to star in Twixt, that’s how.

But that’s assuming Top Gun 2 ever comes together. Even Kilmer acknowledges that the movie is a long way off and a lot of pieces still need to fall into place, but if it does ever happen, it might have both Maverick and Iceman. And hey, maybe the Drone software can be called G.O.O.S.E. and get voiced by Anthony Edwards. Of course, that software will inevitably crash.
