While Michael Bay's live-action Transformers movies get an awful lot of attention, die-cast die-hard fans of the long-running sentient robot franchise have been enjoying Autobot adventures on the small screen and in the pages of various comic book arcs for years. One of the more recent runs, started in 2015, combined the Hasbro toy line with the IDW story, Transformers: Combiner Wars. This series sees a war on Cybertron coming to an end, but a new conflict rising on the horizon; now, fans of Transformers: Combiner Wars will get to see that fight come alive in an all new animated series.
The new series, developed and produced by Machinima as their first digital-first series, will be debuting on August 2nd on the social entertainment platform go90™ in the US, AMC Networks International Iberia in Spain and Portugal, and in other territories to be announced at a later date. The first look at Transformers: Combiner Wars was unveiled during a Cannes Lions Festival panel co-hosted by Hasbro Inc. and Machinima, and we have those images for you below, along with more details on the series.
For those of you, like me, who aren't super familiar with the Transformers: Combiner Wars story, don't fret! There will be a four-episode mini-series titled Prelude to the Combiner Wars that will be told from four distinct points of view in order to reveal the current state of Cybertron and prepare viewers for the full series later this summer. The prelude will be available on YouTube, Facebook, and go90 starting June 28th.
Here's what Stephen Davis, Chief Content Officer of Hasbro, had to say about the new series:
“Machinima is known as a leader of the digital content space and has tremendous creative talent within their network. We are excited to partner with them to tell a new kind of Transformers story for the digital generation. The writers, artists and voice actors working on this series are all true fans of the franchise, and their love for these characters really shines through in Combiner Wars.”
