A new trailer for the next film from The Road and Lawless director John Hillcoat has been released online. Triple 9 centers on a group of thieves wreaking havoc across Los Angeles and the team of cops trying to take them down. The film appears to live in the grey area between “good” and “bad”, as allegiances are tested and a badge doesn’t necessarily absolve someone of wrongdoing. Hillcoat has a tendency to tell fairly bleak and grim stories, and while Triple 9 doesn’t appear to deviate from that thematic throughline, he has assembled an absolutely stellar cast led by Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, and Kate Winslet.

It’ll be interesting to see how the film stands out from the “dirty cop” genre, from which we’ve seen countless stories over the years. Winslet—currently in the midst of an Oscar campaign for her stunning work in Steve Jobs—appears to be having fun as a villain, and Affleck's a fine actor who I'm always eager to see more from. Although its grimness can be challenging, I'm a fan of Hillcoat’s work, and the ensemble here is terrific, so I’ve got high hopes for this one.

Check out the new Triple 9 trailer below. The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Aaron Paul, and Norman Reedus. Triple 9 opens in theaters on February 19th.
