Open Road has released the first red-band trailer for The Road and Lawless director John Hillcoat’s ensemble thriller Triple 9. Scripted by Matt Cook, the story centers on a group of thieves who plan to murder a cop in order to draw attention away from the heist they’ll be pulling on the other side of town. That central premise isn’t the main focus in this trailer, however, as it instead provides a tonal overview of what looks to be a very dark, very tense crime thriller with an absolutely stacked cast. Kate Winslet appears to be one of the primary antagonistic characters as Casey Affleck fills the role of the protagonist, a new-ish cop who has Woody Harrelson as his mentor.

Hillcoat’s filmography is laced with bleak character dramas so the grim tone shouldn’t be too surprising, though I’m really looking forward to seeing how Hillcoat translates that to a present day crime thriller. With a cast this impressive this was already a must-see, but the trailer looks fantastic to boot. A bit puzzling that this was pushed from a fall release to February, but I’m enticed nonetheless.
