HBO has released a new True Detective Season 2 trailer, this time with dialogue! While the excellent first teaser was really only meant to introduce the mood and tone of the wildly popular anthology series’ second season, this new trailer actually gives us a taste of our central characters and what to expect from their storylines. Colin Farrell plays a compromised detective clearly full of self-loathing, Vince Vaughn is a criminal kingpin dealing with his own pressures, Rachel McAdams fills the role of a driven and frustrated detective trying to do the right thing, and Taylor Kitsch plays a war veteran and motorcycle cop suffering from past trauma.

This new trailer could still qualify as a teaser, but each principal character does get his or her own little moment. I know some are wary or even down on True Detective Season 2, but I can’t help but be really, really excited. I don’t expect the magic of Season 1 to be repeated (especially since there are multiple directors this time around), but I really dig the cast and respect creator Nic Pizzolatto for doing something completely different than before.

Check out the new trailer below, along with some new images from the show. The trailer will play on-air this Sunday night. True Detective Season 2 also stars Kelly Reilly and debuts on June 21st on HBO.

Here’s the official synopsis for True Detective Season 2:

A bizarre murder brings together three law-enforcement officers and a career criminal, each of whom must navigate a web of conspiracy and betrayal in the scorched landscapes of California. Colin Farrell is Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective in the all-industrial City of Vinci, LA County. Vince Vaughn plays Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur in danger of losing his life’s work, while his wife and closest ally (Kelly Reilly), struggles with his choices and her own. Rachel McAdams is Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective often at odds with the system she serves, while Taylor Kitsch plays Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle cop for the California Highway Patrol who discovers a crime scene which triggers an investigation involving three law enforcement groups, multiple criminal collusions, and billions of dollars.
