The last bit of news we got from the Twin Peaks revival camp was not particularly good. After a bumpy start that almost concluded with David Lynch leaving the project, Showtime announced that the series would not be ready to premiere until at least 2017, rather than its preposed 2016 bid. For those like this reviewer who wait with fevered anticipation for any little thing that comes from the mind of Mr. Lynch, who hasn't completed a feature since 2006's inexplicable Inland Empire, this was a major disappointment. And this misery was only worsened by the fact that Lynch had wrangled not only a large portion of his original cast, including the great Kyle MacLachlan as Agent Dale Cooper, but also a very promising supporting cast for the revival, from Laura Dern and Peter Scarsgaard to Amanda Seyfried and Balthazar Getty.

Well, here are two more disproportionate reasons that the wait for 2017 is growing a bit more unbearable: Naomi Watts and Tom Sizemore are now both confirmed to be appearing in the revival series. The feeling that arises from this casting, specifically in reference to Watts, is that the new Twin Peaks series will serve as a great reunion of some of Lynch's most memorable actors. Watts, of course, was the lynchpin to the filmmaker's brilliant, enveloping Mulholland Drive, while the aforementioned Getty was one of the leads in the truly nightmarish Lost Highway. Dern, for her part, has been Lynch's primary muse for years, being the only real star of Inland Empire and a strong supporting presence in Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart.

As for Sizemore, there has been plenty of talk about his personal problems (which are numerous and not to be taken lightly) but the man has proven to be a striking performer in several films, a few of which are true classics. I'm thinking specifically of Michael Mann's Heat, Devil in a Blue Dress, Kathryn Bigelow's Strange Days, and Bringing Out the Dead, as well as Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down. If he brings half of the energy he showed in those films to Twin Peaks, his presence will be welcome.
