A remake of the sports movie Victory is on the way via an unlikely source. Per The Wrap, The Shallows and Non-Stop filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra is onboard to direct Warner Bros.'s remake of director John Huston’s 1981 sports drama Victory, which starred Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone, and Pele. The story revolves around a soccer match during World War II between allied POWs and the German National Team to be played in Nazi-occupied Paris. The POWs must decide whether to try and escape, or work to defeat the Nazis on the national stage, thus humiliating them publicly.

Warrior filmmaker Gavin O’Connor and Anthony Tambakis wrote a draft of the script in 2017 and Tambakis is now doing a rewrite. Collet-Serra is coming off of directing Disney’s big Jungle Cruise movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, which he chose over Suicide Squad 2, turning down the Warner Bros. superhero sequel.

Collet-Serra has carved out an interesting career for himself. The Spanish filmmaker made his feature debut on the House of Wax remake and broke out with the horror film Orphan, but subsequently went on to become something of an auteur in the action-thriller genre, helming Liam Neeson in the films Unknown, Non-Stop, and Run All Night. He switched gears in 2016 with the hit Blake Lively film The Shallows and nearly made the Akira movie for Warner Bros., but following up the family film Jungle Cruise with an uplifting sports drama is certainly a move towards showing off his diversity rather than flirting with bigger budgets.
