To be honest, I never really thought this day would come. Voyage of Time is a film that Terrence Malick aficionados have become overly familiar with over the years, but one that little promise that it might actually ever be released. The documentary, which is a celebration of life and covers the grand history of the cosmos, picked up considerable steam while Malick was putting together his masterpiece The Tree of Life, and now here we are, with a genuine Voyage of Time trailer right in front of us.
The picture is finally complete and set for release in theaters on October 7th, and it looks absolutely glorious. Brad Pitt narrates this trailer (as well as the film), and the imagery on display is heavenly—one can only imagine what it’ll look like in full IMAX glory. And can we just take a moment to praise the fact that this isn’t in 3D and thus won’t suffer from darkening or dulling the image whatsoever?
In true Malick fashion, the release of Voyage of Time is not so simple. It’ll be available in two very different formats. Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience is a 40-minute, massive-screen adventure narrated by Pitt which “immerses audiences directly into the story of the universe and life itself.” That film will be shown exclusively in IMAX theaters, but if you want to also see the longer version, Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey runs 90-minutes in length, is narrated by Cate Blanchett, and “takes audiences on a poetic and provocative ride full of open questions.” That iteration of the film will be shown in traditional theaters.
Me? I’ll be seeing both versions at least once. For now, behold the Voyage of Time trailer below (via The Film Stage).
Here’s the official synopsis for Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience:
Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience is a one-of-a-kind celebration of life and the grand history of the cosmos, transporting audiences into a vast yet up-close and personal journey that spans the eons from the Big Bang to the dinosaur age to our present human world… and beyond. A labor of love from one of American cinema’s most acclaimed and visually exciting filmmakers, Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life), Voyage ofTime has been nearly four decades in the making and represents the filmmaker’s first foray into documentary storytelling. The film’s panorama of awe-inspiring images will take you into the heart of monumental events never witnessed — from the birth of the stars and galaxies to the explosion of diverse life-forms on planet earth, including humankind — in immersive new ways that only IMAX can deliver. This is a cosmic experience — a hymn to the glories of nature, life and scientific discovery — in which all the elements come together to form Malick’s most original film to date.
