What an awesome weekend for Walker Stalker Con 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia. Not only did The Walking Dead annual convention fall on Halloween weekend, but also after one of the most critical cliffhangers for Season 6 — the fate of Glenn (Steven Yeun).
This is the third year for the fan-driven event, which humbly started as a podcast about the show. Overall estimated attendance for the three days in Atlanta is 50,000 people. Walker Stalker Con added four new cities in 2015, including San Francisco, Dallas, Philadelphia and Orlando, but organizers say Atlanta is still clearly home base. Likely due to the show being filmed in Georgia, the crowds are significantly larger and the fans the most enthusiastic. Atlanta is also the only Walker Stalker Con city where the show’s leading man Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) makes an appearance.
Not all of the Atlanta attendees are local though, fans of all types and ages came from as far away as California and Connecticut. The convention features a small army of passionate volunteers, several hundred each day and as many as 900 total. 200 vendors and artists offer anything and everything The Walking Dead themed, including cosplay photo booths; drawings; toys, shirts and other merchandise; video games; bouncy houses; arts and crafts; musical performances; and even tattoos. There’s also a short film festival; zombie makeup application tutorial; tactical zombie maze; zombies for hire; virtual reality tour bus; and an immersion escape-room (“The Walking Dead Experience”). The only thing perhaps missing was zombie apocalypse survival gear.
But what attendees really came for, was the opportunity to interact with the cast. Majority of The Walking Dead familiar faces made appearances in addition to a lengthy list of stars from other hit shows and films (including Norman Reedus, David Morrissey, Laurie Holden, Scott Wilson, and more, all of whom you can see below) . The actors greeted adoring fans warmly, gave hugs, signed autographs, took selfies, shared social media posts and genuinely thanked attendees for being part of The Walking Dead family.
