Turtle power only gets you so far the second time around, apparently, as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows grossed $35 million this weekend, which is about a 40% drop from the original. The sequel business isn’t doing as well as it once did in Hollywood, especially given Alice Through the Looking Glass’s continued box office struggle (which may have had something to do with the Johnny Depp domestic abuse allegations, or perhaps not).

Both Turtles and Alice surprised the studios when they debuted to huge numbers originally, prompting, naturally, sequels. But maybe that’s a strategy that could see some tweaking after these recent performances. On the other hand, Out of the Shadows notably plays to a younger audience, which could add to its longevity on the home video market over time.

For the most part, it was a pretty mediocre weekend overall, with the only big surprise being how well Me Before You has done. The romantic weepie, starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, has performed at the top of expectations, grossing $18.3 million over the weekend. It also took the #1 spot in the UK with $2.7 million.

Though Me Before You also snagged the second place ranking on Friday, it was ultimately outperformed by X-Men: Apocalypse, which snuck into the #2 spot with $22 million, an as-predicted 66% decline from last week. That leaves it with a $116 million gross so far domestically, and over $300 million worldwide, which, when compared to other superhero franchise numbers this year, is pretty paltry.

The Lonely Island’s Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping seemed to have a fairly decent start on Friday, but ultimately underperformed with $4.6 million for the weekend. The movie apparently cost $21 million to make, so recouping that may unfortunately put this one in the “bombed” category.

On the opposite end, we can now crown Captain America: Civil War as the highest grossing movie of 2016. Team Cap indeed!
