WELCOME TO PEOPLE

Written by Alex Kurtzman and his longtime writing partner Roberto Orci (the duo behind Transformers and Star Trek), the film stars Chris Pine as a businessman who returns home after his estranged father’s death and discovers that he has an alcoholic sister (Elizabeth Banks) with a 12-year-old son. The impressive supporting cast includes Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass, Jon Favreau and Michelle Pffeifer. News of the June 29th release date comes courtesy of The Playlist, but they don’t specify whether it’ll be a wide or limited release. The film will square off against G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Magic Mike in wide release that weekend, while Sundance darling Beasts of the Southern Wild and Take This Waltz starring Seth Rogen and Michelle Williams open in limited release.

HICK

Based on the popular novel by Andrea Portes, Hick star Chloe Moretz as a 13-year-old-girl who runs away from home to escape her mom’s alcoholic boyfriends and to seek fame. On the road, she meets a moody drifter (Eddie Redmayne) and a free spirit (Blake Lively) who becomes a surrogate mother. Despite an impressive cast (Alec Baldwin and Juliette Lewis also star), the film didn’t draw great reviews from its premiere at TIFF. Matt found himself incredibly bored by the movie, and you can read his review here. The VOD model is probably a smart move, as the film opens one week after The Avengers and on the same weekend as The Dictator and Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows (which also stars Moretz).

FOR A GOOD TIME, CALL…

Finally, For a Good Time Call… was fairly successful at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The movie was written by Katie Anne Naylon and Lauren Anne Miller who star alongside Ari Graynor. The story centers on a group of women who start a phone sex line, with multiple celebrity cameos to boot. Matt had fairly positive things to say in his review. For a Good Time Call… is currently the only film opening in limited release on September 14th, with Ben Affleck’s Argo, Finding Nemo 3D, and Resident Evil: Retribution all opening wide.
