We’ve got a couple of television casting stories to share with you today. First up, the incredibly funny Will Forte has been tapped to lead the Fox comedy pilot Rebounding. Deadline reports that Forte will play Danny in the uplifting comedy which centers on “a man recovering from the death of his fiancée with the help of the idiots on his pickup basketball team. It’s not exactly MacGruber: The Series, but I could definitely see Forte having fun with the premise. The single-camera pilot comes from writers/executive producers Joe Port and Joe Wiseman (The IT Crowd), executive producer Steve Levitan (Modern Family), and director Jason Winer. Forte has an excellent recurring role on 30 Rock, and while a part of me would genuinely love to see MacGruber turned into a TV show, I’m glad to see Forte is getting the chance to lead a series of his own.

Additionally, Carla Gugino is poised to join the promising new drama series Political Animals. The show centers on a divorced former First Lady and current Secretary of State who struggles to juggle her difficult personal life and her crucial career. Sigourney Weaver is set to star as the Secretary of State, and THR reports that Gugino will play Washington D.C.-based Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Susan Berg. The journalist becomes an unlikely ally for the secretary whom she spent her career tearing down. Lone Star’s James Wollk plays Weaver’s son and current chief of staff, while Brittany Ishibashi plays his fiancée.

I’m not normally drawn to USA’s programming, but Political Animals has me intrigued. The network has boasted a number of original series starring former West Wing stars, and I’m interested to see how their serialized stab at politics stacks up. Greg Berlanti wrote and will direct the pilot, with a planned six-episode first season.
