David Ayer's Suicide Squad has been making waves across the Internet thanks to a new feature in Empire Magazine's upcoming edition that explores the movie, cast, and characters in detail. We've already seen a great look at Jared Leto's Joker and have learned a bit about his process in bringing the dark character to life. While many fans of Joker and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) are looking forward to seeing their relationship on the big screen in action for the first time, some new plot details indicate that there's a bit of a wrinkle in that romance.

Will Smith, who plays Floyd Lawton / Deadshot, opened up about a bizarre little love triangle that occurs in the movie. It's unclear just how deeply this will be developed, but it does reflect a similar interaction between Deadshot and Harley that takes place in the DCnU version of the Suicide Squad. It remains to be seen if the live-action movie version will follow that twisted path precisely, but if it does, then fans are likely in for a ... face-off ... between suitors.

From Empire's extensive coverage of Suicide Squad, here's what Smith had to say about the relationships between his character Deadshot, Robbie's Harley Quinn, and Leto's Joker (via CBR):

"Harley is the biggest troublemaker, but Deadshot's actually eyeballing her a little bit," Smith said. "There's a pretty ragged romantic triangle there."

Ayer also chimed in on the shake-up in the fan-favorite pairing between Joker and Harley:

"It's about [Harley] breaking free of The Joker and becoming this fully actualised, independent person," Ayer explained. "That really is a metaphor for everyone's journey here."

More news continues to emerge from Ayer's Suicide Squad which suggests that each of the main characters really does have a central arc that is explored within the film's plot. Harley attempting to get out from under the control of The Joker is huge, and something we'll likely see throughout the picture in what looks to be a non-linear storytelling style. The questions that remain include what everyone else's journey is going to look like, and just how Harley and Deadshot's will end up.
