Yesterday, Hugh Jackman started teasing some big announcements to come in the upcoming weeks about Wolverine 3, a note that many took as warning of an impending arrival of the first trailer for the sequel to The Wolverine. Well, that still might very well be the case but this morning brought news from Jackman and Wolverine 3 director James Mangold of a different sort.
Both Mangold and Jackman took to Twitter today to announce that the third Wolverine movie will be titled simply Logan; Mangold showcased script pages with the title watermark over the text. It’s a pretty logical choice considering the fact that the movie was always set to focus more on Wolverine as a man beyond his powers as one of the most valuable players in the X-Men. The movie means to be more of a dark character study from what we’ve been hearing, with Jackman himself speaking of a different tone to the movie while teasing the upcoming announcements. Then again, the fact that we now know that Mr. Sinister will play a key role, in some capacity, to the action in Logan makes it clear that there will be plenty for X-Men devotees to chew on.
On top of the title reveal, Jackman and Mangold debuted the first poster for the movie, which is made up of a single shot of a child’s hand holding Logan’s hand, claws out. This suggests that the movie will also be a family affair in some sense, with Logan protecting either an actual family that he’s made since the happenings of The Wolverine or a community or family that he is accepted into. We’ll have to wait until a trailer lands to know exactly where that part of the story is going, and it’s likely that at least a teaser trailer will be arriving before Thanksgiving arrives. For now, it’s just nice to know that the movie won’t be called Wolverine 3.
You can take a look at the poster right below, and the movie is set to hit theaters on March 3rd, 2017.
