Patty Jenkins did a terrific job with 2017’s Wonder Woman, and while it took a bit longer than expected for Warner Bros. to close a deal with her for the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, I’m glad that both sides came to an agreement so Jenkins could keep telling this story. Details on the film are still scare other than the setting (1984) and that it will see Diana (Gal Gadot) facing off against Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) and dealing with the return Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). Unless the film is a massive flop, which is unlikely, Warner Bros. will likely move ahead with a Wonder Woman 3. Although Jenkins isn’t attached to do the third film, she does have a vision for it.

Speaking to Vanity Fair [via The Playlist], Jenkins said:

“I have pretty clear plans for ‘Wonder Woman 3,’” Jenkins said. “Whether I [direct] it or not, I see how her arc should end in my incarnation of Wonder Woman. I have great passion for that.”

It’s unlikely that Warner Bros. would want to see this character come to an “end”, but it would still be cool to see a conclusion to Diana’s story, something that perhaps bring her right to the events of Batman v Superman and explains how she’s been living out her days in the regular world. Or, it could go past Justice League and try to establish something new. There are so many cool things you can do with the character, and I’m not surprised that Jenkins has a vision for Diana’s story past Wonder Woman 1984. Whether or not she gets to tell that story remains to be seen since outside of Sam Raimi and Christopher Nolan, no other director has currently done a full trilogy of superhero movies.

Wonder Woman 1984 also stars Pedro Pascal and opens June 5, 2020.
