Based on the IDW comic created by Beau Smith and developed for television by Emily Andras, the Syfy series Wynonna Earp follows the life of the great, great granddaughter of famous lawman Wyatt Earp, who has inherited his mythic abilities and famous gun, along with his legendary old West enemies, known as revenant demons. Now, as a special agent in the top secret Black Badge Division, and with the help of younger sister Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley), Agent Xavier Dolls (Shamier Anderson) and notorious gunslinger Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon), Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) is determined to put an end to the Earp curse, once and for all.

While at Comic-Con, the ultra-charming co-stars of the delightful, action-packed series (already picked up for Season 2) – Melanie Scrofano, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, Shamier Anderson, Tim Rozon and Katherine Barrell (who plays Officer Nicole Haught) – stopped by the Collider interview suite to chat about all things Wynonna Earp. They discussed how appreciative they are of their incredible fan base, the amazing gifts they’ve received, their most fun moments of the season, that shocking cliffhanger, #WayHaught, bringing such bad-ass women to TV, and staying tuned to Season 2 for answers.

Collider: This show seems like it’s the most fun. What was your most fun moment to shoot, over the course of the season?

SCROFANO: I got to slip and slide under a serpent, which is pretty dope. Most of the stunts are so fun. Remember the harness? [Shamier’s] balls went into his body.

ANDERSON: My voice went into falsetto, that entire day.

SCROFANO: Whereas I don’t have that problem, so anytime I was in the harness was the best day on set.

ANDERSON: I suffered for the art and the fans of Wynonna Earp. It was worth it, though.

PROVOST-CHALKLEY: Anytime I had a shotgun was a good day, definitely.

ANDERSON: Dominique is bad-ass with a shotgun. She can fire multiple rounds with one hand, to the side.

PROVOST-CHALKLEY: I didn’t actually have the shotgun that much, in the season, so when I did, it was like, “Oh, yeah!”

BARRELL: For the finale, we got to do the party scenes and I really liked that because I had never been with everybody else. That was my favorite days.

ROZON: The first time that I worked with each person was the most fun for me because we’re just never going to have that again.

The season finale left things off in a pretty shocking place. When you read that script, what was your reaction?

ROZON: Because Waverly is going to shoot Wynonna or Doc? That’s a cliffhanger?!

SCROFANO: Tim wouldn’t shut up about it. He was like, “Who do you think she’s gonna shoot, the star of the show or number three?! Who has more job security?”

ROZON: I figure that Wynonna is safe!

They could always retitle the show for Season 2.

SCROFANO: That’s what I said!

ANDERSON: That would be a first.

ROZON: When the gun is pointed at two of you and one of them is the lead actress, you stress a little.

This show has a very devoted fan base that has really fallen in love with this show and these characters. What’s it like to hear and see that reaction?

ROZON: I feel like there should be another chair, at all the things we do, for the fandom. They’re another part of this show. They’ve helped this show get to where it is, and they’ve been amazing.

ANDERSON: It’s been unbelievable. The gifts are incredible. We get presents!

SCROFANO: The thing is that they’re not giving us gifts of just random things. They know us.

ROZON: I got mustache cookies.

PROVOST-CHALKLEY: The reaction has been quite overwhelming. It’s amazing!

SCROFANO: And we’re not asking for gifts, but we appreciate the thought.

ANDERSON: I do like Nike shoes!

Shamier, what’s the deal with Xavier Dolls?

ROZON: Werewolf!

ANDERSON: To be honest, I want him to be a unicorn. That’s my thing.

Did they tell you exactly what he is?

ANDERSON: It’s been an ongoing question. That is the one question that I’ve been asked the most about my character, Dolls. Honestly, I just tell everybody that they’ve gotta keep watching. We’re going to be figuring it out, as it goes. There’s no set thing that Dolls is. You’re just gonna have to watch. I want him to be a unicorn, though.

SCROFANO: The reaction to Dolls has been great because he’s the guy you think you know. You think he’s the one that’s going to keep it all together, and then, all of a sudden, his eyes turn yellow and it’s such a shock. It’s a fun journey, to watch what’s going to happen with him.

Melanie and Tim, the relationship between Wynonna and Doc seems to take them both by surprise. What do you think it is that draws them together?

SCROFANO: Doc is a link to her past that has brought her to this point. He’s a fountain of knowledge and wisdom for her, and I think he gives her perspective, but he’s also just as crazy as she is, in some ways. It’s a nice joining of two very alike but different souls.

ROZON: They’re both faulted, vulnerable and crazy, and they accept that in the other person. He’s definitely drawn to Wynonna.

Dominique and Melanie, how do you think the fact that Waverly is not really an Earp is going to affect things between these sisters?

PROVOST-CHALKLEY: That was a really big episode for Waverly, at the end, and we left it on such a cliffhanger. I think that’s what drew her to touch that tentacle goo, in a moment of recklessness and thinking, “What the hell is going on?! I had no idea about this not being an Earp situation.” I think she’s going to be heartbroken, to be honest. She’s been building up all the research, and she’s the one that wants to be a part of Black Badge the most and fight the Earp curse. And now, she’s at the stage where her identity has been messed with. I’m not even sure that she’s going to tell Wynonna. I don’t know. Obviously, Emily Andras is writing the show and I haven’t got a say, but I have a feeling that Waverly wouldn’t tell Wynonna. It would be something she’d have to deal with herself, which is horrible. I don’t know.

SCROFANO: She’s discovered her identity over the season, only to lose it again.

PROVOST-CHALKLEY: And that’s heartbreaking because she’s come so far.

Dominique and Katherine, the bond between Waverly and Nicole has been so beautiful to watch develop. Was that a fun dynamic to explore?

ANDERSON: #WayHaught

BARRELL: Totally! The response was overwhelming. We had no idea it was going to get so big and be such a huge part of the show. It’s been amazing! I think that the most amazing thing is receiving letters from fans who have been like, “I’ve never felt represented. I’ve been watching TV for 20 years and I’ve never seen myself in a positive, happy relationship on TV.” Hearing those stories makes it so much more important. The impact it’s having is huge and very needed, in the LGBT community.

And these women are all such bad-asses.

BARRELL: Yeah, and they’re strong, especially Nicole. She’s such a great character and she’s so confident in herself and who she is. We don’t see a lot of gay characters like that. She just happens to be gay. She’s an awesome woman who’s great at her job, and she’s gay. I think that’s what makes her resonate more with the fans, for sure.

It’s so great to see such strong women on television, and I’m definitely excited for Season 2.

ANDERSON: You’ve gotta thank Beau Smith, the creator of the original comics, and Emily Andras. The combination of those two is brilliant. Wynonna Earp is not a damsel in distress, which is really cool. It’s a huge part of why I wanted to do this project. And Mel kills it, every single day of every episode.

SCROFANO: Except Tuesdays!

Wynonna Earp will return to Syfy for Season 2.
