Filmmaker Bryan Singer has shared a couple more tantalizing images from the set of the currently filming X-Men: Apocalypse, one of which features the triumphant return of Patrick Stewart…kind of. Stewart came back to the set of the new X-Men, but only for a visit with old pals. As seen in the Instagram, he’s hanging out by the monitors with Jason Reitman, who swung by before his X-Men-heavy live-read of The Big Lebowski in Montreal.

The more revealing Instagram, however, simultaneously touts the film’s practical sets while teasing the origins of the titular villain. Oscar Isaac plays Apocalypse, a man who was quite possibly the world’s first person to carry the mutant gene, originating in ancient Egypt before somehow getting to the 1980s to wreak havoc on the X-Men. The Days of Future Past sequel continues the arcs of Raven (Jennifer Lawrence), Hank (Nicholas Hoult), Charles (James McAvoy), and Erik (Michael Fassbender) while also bringing a slew of new mutants into the fold: Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Jubilee (Lana Candor), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), and Angel (Ben Hardy). It’s this interplay between the franchise veterans and the “new new class” that I’m eager to see play out in the follow-up.

But for now take a look at a couple of behind-the-scenes photos below, and note the reply from Singer’s The Usual Suspects screenwriter/Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation director Christopher McQuarrie to the latest image. X-Men: Apocalypse arrives in theaters on May 27, 2016.
