We’ve known for a while now that an extended version of X-Men: Days of Future Past was coming to home video, dubbed the “Rogue Cut”, and now specific release date details about the alternate cut have been unveiled. Director Bryan Singer took to Periscope today to announce that the Rogue Cut of X-Men: Days of Future Past will be released on July 14th. We previously learned that the extended version of the film will be 17 minutes longer, and Singer again reiterated that amount of new footage in today’s update. You can already pre-order the release right here, and judging by the image above, there are some serious changes in store.
The initial cut of Days of Future Past included an extended sequence towards the beginning of the movie that essentially saw Patrick Stewart’s Charles and Ian McKellen’s Erik on a mission together during the future-set portion of the movie. Writer/producer Simon Kinberg previously told us a little bit about the sequence, which features Rogue prominently, and why it didn’t make the final cut:
“Just to see what that would look like. I mean, truly, seriously, it was like, ‘What would it be like to have Patrick and Ian on a road trip together?’ And that was kind of, you know, it got condensed as I wrote it and then when we shot it, but it was just a sub-plot. It was a perfectly good sub-plot and people will see it one day, and Anna was great in it and it was well-directed; it just didn’t serve the overall story. And it didn’t, it never did, it was created outside the core story. As a result, when you watched the movie, you were like, ‘Why are we on this detour, on a movie that already has two time periods, two types of Sentinels, 10-12 main characters, just as a lark?’ And so it ended up getting cut.”
Singer also previously revealed that in addition to being 17 minutes longer than the theatrical cut of the film, the Rogue Cut also features “a few little changes.” It’ll be interesting to see if this alternate version is significantly different than the theatrical iteration, or if it simply includes this lengthy future-set excursion. The aforementioned image shows Rogue potentially played a much larger role in the central plot point, but I guess we’ll find out for sure this summer.
