No one is as passionate as Vin Diesel when it comes to a new xXx sequel, and he continues to insist that another one is coming. The success of the Fast & Furious franchise has meant Diesel gets to pursue his pet projects, and since he managed to eek out Riddick a couple years ago, I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that he’s gearing up to finally make xXx 3 (he didn’t star in 2005’s xXx: State of the Union, which was a smart move on his part).

On Instagram earlier today, Diesel posted the following:

And what shit will come? For those of you who have managed to go without seeing xXx, it’s about an extreme sports star who’s recruited by the government to be a special agent. It was supposed to be a rebuke of James Bond, but instead came off as smarmy in its own fashion. Nathan Rabin’s Forgotbusters for the movie does a great job of breaking down why it’s such a disaster and why we shouldn’t exactly be hurting for another one.

Also, from a franchise perspective, it’s the antithesis of what’s made Fast & Furious so successful, which is a team dynamic. Diesel thrives among a group of actors that can help balance him out. His xXx character, Xander Cage, is a smug show-off who bleeds Mountain Dew and exudes Axe body spray. He’s not the hero we ever wanted, and it’s Diesel indulging in his own hubris. I’m not against him taking on star vehicles, and there’s something delightfully nerdy about his upcoming The Last Witch Hunter that makes it appealing. But as for xXx 3, it would be better if this stayed in development hell.
