With John Lasseter in London promoting upcoming Disney projects and D23 about to happen in California, I knew a lot of Disney news was about to break. So it really shouldn’t surprise me to see all these Disney stories this morning.

Anyway, the latest is Zachary Levi (“Chuck”) and Mandy Moore will be providing the lead voices for Walt Disney’s digital 3D-animated musical action-adventure “Rapunzel”. The film is based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale and it’s due for release in late 2010 with music from Oscar winner Alan Menken (“Beauty and the Beast”, “Aladdin”). rapunzel_movie_image_walt_disney_pictures_christmas_2010_l.jpgFirst of all, I’m a huge fan of Zachary Levi. I’ve interviewed him a number of times and the guy is one of the nicest actors I’ve ever spoken with. So hearing the news that he’s going to be a voice in a Walt Disney animated film is very cool. According to the heatvisionblog, Zach will be voicing the “dashing bandit who finds himself on the road with the rebellious, teenage hair apparent.” The only real question I have about Zach is…can he sing? Because we all know Mandy Moore has a voice.

According to the article, Disney had been trying to make a “Rapunzel” movie for many years. Eventually the studio gave up, but when John Lasseter became the head of animation, he decided to also pursue the project but started from scratch. That’s why he’s John Lasseter.

The story “picks up with the princess, famous for her 70 feet of golden hair, after she’s been stolen from her parents’ castle as an infant and imprisoned. Now a teenager, Rapunzel escapes and goes on the run with a bandit as her captor pursues them.”

While kids today probably have no idea who “Rapunzel” is, it’s a classic story and one that I’m sure will be done right. Byron Howard and Nathan Greno are directing. More info as we get it.
